We Advocate. We Educate

We are at the forefront of efforts in Washington, D.C., championing the cause of fire survivors by organizing federal advocacy delegations focused on resiliency, recovery, and the improvement of public policy. Led by our CEO, Jennifer Gray Thompson, who serves on the Bipartisan Policy Center's Disaster Response Reform Task Force, we actively make recommendations to Congress to ensure the voices of fire survivors are heard and acted upon.

Recent Bill

H.R. 5863

The Federal Disaster Tax Relief Act (H.R. 5863) protects wildfire victims by excluding liability compensation from taxable income if payments cover damages, expenses, or losses during a Federally declared wildfire disaster. This ensures wildfire victims aren't burdened with unexpected tax bills or disqualified from critical benefits like Medicaid or VA assistance.

After the Fire USA raised this issue with Congressman Mike Thompson (D-Napa) in October 2021. Since then, we’ve organized numerous delegations to Washington, D.C., advocating tirelessly for this legislation.

The journey included setbacks, such as the failure of H.R. 7035, but we persisted. In 2024, the Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act passed the House (357-70) on January 31, led by Congressman Greg Steube (R-Fla). On December 4, 2024, H.R. 5863 passed the Senate under Unanimous Consent, championed by Senator Alex Padilla (D-CA) and Senator Ron Wyden (D-Oregon).

This victory represents the power of advocacy and the resilience of fire survivors.
